The right maintenance regime depends on the vessel, its flag, its operating category, the installed system and any requirements imposed by its classification society, insurer or management system. International vessels subject to SOLAS must keep fire protection systems in good working order and available for immediate use, with maintenance built into the ship’s safety-management arrangements.

Manufacturer instructions matter. Fixed marine systems are engineered around a specific protected-space volume, extinguishing agent, release arrangement and approved components. Changes to pipework, ventilation, machinery layout or the enclosure can affect whether the system performs as intended.

Records must be retained. Service reports, inspection records, system specifications, corrective actions and relevant certificates are part of a defensible maintenance history. They are also the first documents likely to be requested during a survey, audit or insurance review.

Carbon dioxide systems require particular care. CO₂ is highly effective in enclosed machinery spaces but can be fatal if released accidentally. The IMO requires planned maintenance, strict safety procedures and trained personnel for specified maintenance tasks on fixed CO₂ systems.
