When Do You Need Refresher Training?

First aid skills fade over time, and regulations change. We will always tell you honestly when your staff need re-qualifying to remain compliant.

When an annual refresher is the right call:

The HSE strongly recommends that all first aiders complete an annual half-day refresher course to maintain their skills and keep up to date with any changes in protocols.

When full requalification makes more sense:

First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work certificates expire after three years. Before the certificate expires, staff must complete a formal requalification course to remain legally recognised as first aiders.

Your Legal Requirements

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers must provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.

A first aid needs assessment is a legal requirement. The Responsible Person must assess the specific risks in their workplace to determine how many first aiders are required and what level of training they need.

Certificates must be valid. If a first aider's certificate expires, they are no longer considered competent under HSE regulations, and your business may no longer meet its legal requirements for first aid cover.

The consequences of non-compliance are serious. Failing to provide adequate first aid provision can result in enforcement action from the HSE, increased liability in the event of an accident, and worse outcomes for injured staff.

How many first aiders does my business legally need?

The number of first aiders required is determined by a first aid needs assessment, which is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The assessment must consider the nature of the work, the number of employees, the layout of the premises, and shift patterns.

As a general guide, the HSE recommends at least one appointed person for low-risk workplaces with fewer than 25 employees, and at least one trained first aider for higher-risk environments or larger teams.

What is the difference between Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work?

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day course that covers the core skills needed to respond to a medical emergency, including CPR, management of an unresponsive casualty, and treatment of minor injuries. It is suitable for low-risk workplaces.

First Aid at Work (FAW) is a 3-day qualification that covers a significantly broader range of conditions and is required in higher-risk environments or where the needs assessment identifies a greater level of cover.

Both qualifications are valid for three years, after which full requalification is required.

How long is a first aid certificate valid for?

Both Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue.

The HSE strongly recommends that certificate holders complete an annual refresher course during this period to maintain their skills and stay current with any changes in protocols.

Once the three-year certificate expires, the individual must complete a full requalification course to remain a recognised first aider under HSE guidelines.
