Your Legal Requirements
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person must nominate a sufficient number of competent persons (fire wardens) to implement evacuation procedures and assist in fire safety management.
Adequate training is a legal requirement. The law states that these nominated persons must be provided with adequate training to carry out their roles effectively.
Numbers must be sufficient. Your fire risk assessment will dictate how many fire wardens you need, taking into account the size of the premises, the number of floors, shift patterns, and holiday cover.
The consequences of non-compliance are serious. Failing to appoint and train sufficient fire wardens can lead to a chaotic and dangerous evacuation during a real fire, resulting in enforcement action and severe liability for the business owner.
